God could choose precious stones for the building of the Ka’aba but He didn’t, because the simpler it is, the more sincerity and purity will be there. The Ka’aba is the flag of Islam. A flag is just a piece of clothing but an entire army takes proud in it and many lives are sacrificed for it.
Mecca is a place sleeping in which is equivalent to striving hard in other places. Prostrating in it is like achieving martyrdom on the path of God. Its virtues cannot be comprehended easily. So it would be a pity if Hajj pilgrims fail to make the most of this spiritual journey.
Mecca is called Umm al-Qura, meaning the mother of regions. It is the place of revelation and security. Just as a mother feeds her children, Mecca should spread security and Risala (prophetic mission) to the whole world.
The gathering of God-worshipping people in Mecca, which is a place where idols were broken, gives us the lesson of breaking idols. What there is in Hajj and Tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka’aba) is:
Simplicity not formalities,
Movement not stagnation,
Remembrance not negligence,
Following the commandments of God not following the East or the West,
Secure environment not corruption and decadence,
Mercy and generosity not stinginess,
Abandoning what is Haram (forbidden) not committing Haram,
Humbleness and meekness not conceit and arrogance,
Fraternity and equality not discrimination and seeking monopoly.
Hajj is the most important and most constructive journey on makes in life. We should ask God to give us the opportunity to benefit from the blessings of this trip. What greater blessing could there be than being the guest of God, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Infallible Imams (AS) and having all of our sins forgiven?
What greater blessing than being part of a millions-strong gathering in a secure place, praying, chanting slogans, doing the disavowal of disbelievers (Bar'aat min-al-mushrikeen), and visiting places in which the important events of Islam’s history took place?
We pray that God will give us the blessing of making the Hajj pilgrimage and visiting the Holy Ka’aba.
